Three Players Advance to U.S. Senior Amateur Championship

Seattle, Wash. (Thursday, September 2) - David Farnam of Kent, Wash. captured medalist honors by firing a 5-under par 67 to beat his nearest competitors by five shots. Farnam’s impressive round included seven birdies, with four of them coming on the difficult par 3’s at Seattle Golf Club. Farnam, who won the PNGA Senior Men’s Public Links Championship last weekend, will be playing in his first U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.

Wilson fires course record at The Home Course

Jeff Wilson, a 47-year-old from Fairfield, Calif., shocked the field well into the evening with an eagle-eagle finish on the eighth and ninth holes at The Home Course for a course-record 62. His finish was six strokes better than anyone at The Home Course.

Haack and Smego Crowned Champions at Inaugural Men's and Women's Mid-Amateur

Walla Walla, Wash. (Saturday, August 7, 2010) – The Inaugural WSGA Men’s and Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship concluded today at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Wash. Mike Haack, a 31 year old from Bellevue, Wash. followed up an opening round of 3-under par 69 with a 2-under par 70 today for a 36-hole total of 5-under par 139 and a two stroke victory. In the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, Lisa Smego of Olympia, Wash. came from 2-strokes behind at the beginning of the round and finished it with a very impressive 11 stroke victory. Smego who is just coming back to competitive golf after a back surgery did not even expect to be playing golf yet, let alone winning championships.

Packer and Kieffer Lead After First Round of Play at Inaugural Men's and Women's Mid-Amateur

Walla Walla, Wash. (Friday, August 6, 2010) – The Inaugural WSGA Men’s and Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship got underway today at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Wash. Sean Packer, a 25 year old from Lake Tapps, Wash. led the way in the Men’s Championship after firing a very impressive opening round of 4-under par 68. Packer’s mistake free round included birdies on holes 7,8,9, and 14. Sitting just one shot back after shooting 3-under par 69’s are Mike Haack of Bellevue, Wash., Bob Burton of Everett, Wash., and Michael Kloenne of West Linn, Ore. Most notably, Haack played the front-9 in 5-under par 31 before struggling with just one birdie on the back-9 and three bogeys.
Denise Kieffer from University Place, Wash. leads the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship heading into tomorrow’s final round after an opening score of 5-over par 77. Kieffer, who won the Inaugural WSGA Champion of Champions last fall had three birdies on her card today but was offset with two doubles and four bogeys. In second place, two strokes back is Lisa Smego of Olympia, Wash. who fired a 7-over par 79 today. Ginny Burkey sits alone in third place and will round out the final group tomorrow after a round of 9-over par 81 today.

Jonson Medals; Five Others Qualify for U.S. Amateur Championship

DuPont, Wash. (Wednesday, August 4, 2010) – Six players advanced to the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship through the 36-hole U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying being played at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. After heavy fog delayed play for 2 and a half hours this morning, 18-hole leader Carl Jonson of Bainbridge Island, Wash. carded a 1-over par 73 to follow-up his first round of 8-under par 64 to capture medalist honors in the field of 144 players.

PNGA Wins Morse Cup; Putnam Leads After Two Rounds of Play

Eugene, Ore. (Wednesday, July 28, 2010) - For the Putnam family, they're hoping its deja vu all over again. The last time the Pacific Coast Amateur was contested at Eugene Country club in 2004, Michael Putnam shot 7-under par 67-70-67-73--277 to take the title. This year, Andrew Putnam has a shot at having his name join his older brother's on the perpetual trophy after shooting 5-under par 68-69--137 to take the 36-hole lead.

Jim and Joey McNelis Win WSGA Parent-Child Championship

Ocean Shores, Wash. (Friday, July 23, 2010) – Jim and Joey McNelis of Gig Harbor, Wash., used a strong finish on the back nine to win the Second Annual WSGA Parent-Child Championship at Ocean Shores Golf Course. The Championship was played in Chapman format which is a 2-person team competition where both players tee off then switch balls, each play a second shot then select the better of the two and finish the hole in alternate shot format.

Thomsen and Brandes Qualify for the U.S. Senior Open Championship to be held at Sahalee CC

Blaine, Wash. (Monday, July 5) – 72 players began the day competing at Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club for two spots into the U.S. Senior Open in a unique year where the championship will be played just down the freeway at Sahalee Country Club in Samammish, Wash.
Jeff Thomsen a very accomplished player/instructor from Boise, Idaho led the field with a 2-under par 70 on the 6903 yard, par 72 layout. On a day where scores seemed unusually high, Thomsen made it look easy with a single bogey on the par-4 2nd hole and three birdies coming on holes 1,2 and 11. Thomsen is a Boise native who was a 2-time All-American at Arizona State University before turning professional in 1976. After stints on the Australian/New Zealand, European PGA, and Asian PGA Tours, Thomsen found his home on the PGA Tour from 1979-1982 where he played 55 events. In his career, Thomsen has played in four Major Championships including the ’78 British Open, ’83 U.S. Open, and the ’90 and ’98 (Sahalee Country Club) PGA Championships.
Tom Brandes of Bellevue, Wash. was the low amateur in the field and claimed the second qualifying spot after a solid round of even par 72 which included three birdies on holes 1, 13 and 16 and three bogeys on holes 3, 6, and 18. Brandes who has been a career amateur is becoming a very familiar face around this championship qualifier as he lost in a playoff for first alternate in 2007, lost in a playoff for the final qualifying spot in 2008, was then medalist in 2009 and went on to play the U.S. Senior Open at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana and now qualified for the 2010 Championship as well.

Wendelken Victorious at 84th WSGA Men's Amateur Championship

Kingston, Wash. (Friday, June 25, 2010) – Jeremy Wendelken fired a final round of 2-under par 70 to capture the 84th Washington State Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship held at White Horse Golf Club in Kingston, Wash. Wendelken finished the championship at 2-under par 286 overall and was the only player in the field to break par bettering 2nd place finisher T.J. Bordeaux of Tacoma, Wash. by three shots.

Burneski Defends Her Title At WSGA Women's Amateur; Murdoch Wins Senior Women's Amateur

Sequim, Wash. (Thursday, June 24, 2010) – Defending champion, Pamela Burneski of Surrey, B.C. and a member of Homestead Farms Golf Resort successfully defended her championship title but it did not come easily. Burneski bogeyed holes 17 and 18 for a final round of 3-over par 75 and a 54-hole total of 4-over par 220 which forced a playoff with Strauss. In the Senior Amateur Championship, Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C. and a member of Homestead Farms Golf Resort finished off a wire-to-wire win after a final round of 1-over par 73 giving her a 54-hole total of even par 216 and a three stroke victory. Murdoch was very steady all day making just two bogeys at holes 5 and 18 with a lone birdie on hole 7 and the rest pars.

Eight Players Advance to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying

Medina, Wash. (Monday, May 10) – 120 players competed for eight spots advancing into Sectional Qualifying, in mild and cool conditions at the U.S. Open Local Qualifying held at Overlake Golf and Country Club in Medina, Wash. on Monday. Jeff Coston, a golf professional from Blaine, Wash. took Medalist honors after leading the field with a 4-under par 67 which included five birdies and just one bogey. Coston will now advance to Sectional Qualifying where he will try and punch a ticket to the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links, which happens to be the location of his only other U.S. Open Championship appearance in 2000 where he made the cut and finished in 53rd place.

Oregon Golf Association Wins PNGA Cup; WSGA Teams Finishes Runner-Up

Roslyn, Wash. (Friday, May 7, 2010) – The strong individual play of the Oregon Golf Association (OGA) sealed the outcome in the final round of the PNGA Cup held at Tumble Creek Club in Roslyn, Wash. The OGA team won an impressive 10 out of a possible 12 points in the final round to win their third PNGA Cup. WSGA Team Set to Compete in 5th PNGA Cup at Tumble Creek

The 5th annual PNGA Cup will descend upon Tumble Creek Club located in Roslyn, Wash. on May 5-7, 2010. The representation includes four men mid-amateur’s of 25 years of age or older, two men of 40 years or older, two senior men of 55 years or older, two women-mid-amateurs of 25 years or older and two senior women of 50 years or older. The format will be four-ball and foursome matches the first day and single matches on the second and final day. With three matches for each player, the championship will allow each competitor to compete against players from each of the other associations.

WSGA Elects Grinspan As President

Federal Way, Wash. (Thursday, November 12, 2009) – The Washington State Golf Association (WSGA) has announced that Ben Grinspan has been elected its new president. The announcement was made October 31 at the WSGA Annual Meeting held at Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Grinspan has been a WSGA board member since 1992, serving as vice president of District 1, which encompasses the north end of the Puget Sound region and is the most populous of the five WSGA districts. He will serve a two-year term as president.
